Accessibility
Our goal. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We also take guidance from the disability justice movement, especially the idea that access is an ongoing conversation led by disabled people, not a checklist we finish once (Sins Invalid, 2019). (Unchecked by a person; AI research only.)
What we’ve done so far
- Body text uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font designed for readers with low vision. The spooky font appears only on a few short words.
- Text and background colors are chosen for strong contrast, and highlighted brain regions get a thicker outline as well as a color change.
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are.
- Every brain image has a written description, and every region’s description is available as text.
- Animations are minimal and turn off if your device is set to reduce motion.
Known gaps
- No disabled users have tested the site yet. That’s marked “Not yet” on Wrestling with AI.
- The interactive brain may not work well with every screen reader, and it needs JavaScript. Without JavaScript, the brain descriptions still appear as text.
- The brain drawings are AI-made and not yet checked for accuracy.
